i feel like i'm 2 feet tall all over again.
i'm staring at the cookie jar at the very top shelf.
it stares back.

i pull a stool that helps me reach higher.
tip my toes, stretch my arms up as high as my little physique allows me,
but to no avail.
still 6 inches too short.
should i stack another stool and
risk falling down and getting hurt?
or should i forgo the cookies
and settle for the loaf of plain white bread
lying on the table that's within my reach?

bread will fill me up.
but it's no chewy chunky chocolate chip cookie.

i think i'll just starve.

It's been too long of a hiatus.
so long, that i don't know where to begin.

while most of you are munching on your roti canai,
accompanied by your milo ice,
my butt is still stuck here in hawaii.
not that it's anything to complain about.
but i do miss home immensely.

exactly a week ago,
a student in our campus committed suicide.
a first in BYUH history.
it is indeed a tragedy because he was loved.
he had friends. good friends.
he even had a girlfriend who prior to his death,
seemed happy together.

if you wanna learn more about him.
he wasn't the typical loner that you would imagine.
there are speculations about why he killed himself.
but i think whatever happened or went through his mind
is now between him and God.
i just hope his family is at peace.

i say this, because although BYUH is a church college,
it is not perfect.
not everyone is doing what they're supposed to,
but i am still grateful that i decided to come here.

i am in awe of what all my peers here are capable of doing.
they pretty much run PCC.
the highest paid attraction in all of oahu.
they are wise beyond their age,
always knowing what's right to say.
not
'seriously just punch him in the face and get some ice cream!'
but
'humble yourself and go talk to him, you are doing this for yourself'.

having been here i am more susceptible of the Lord's miracles.
the sun, sea and sand...
how can people even doubt that there is a God?

This school is not as prestigious as many other schools in mainland.
but it has taught me life long lessons that are even more precious to me.

i've been a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints since birth.
(not at all affiliated to the Fundamental LDS church who's been in the limelight lately.)
but in the past i have not been the person i was taught to be.
i was self-centered, lazy, arrogant, stubborn at best.
i was taught all those things but i did not apply them in my life.
in other wards, i have been a big fat hypocrite.

all those wishes for my birthday..
i really wonder why i have so many friends to begin with.
let alone have close friends whom have done more than i will ever need them to do for me.

i don't know but i can honestly say that
i am a changed person since i've been here.
i have not mastered it but
i am trying my very best to put others first ahead of me.
i am also learning to be patient and trusting in my heavenly father.

coming to hawaii may have been the best thing that's ever happened to me.
people here, in this school particularly, are so encouraging.
back home, i feel like nothing i do is ever good enough.
i'm just this average girl of average height and weight,
who's averagely smart, from an average family,
averagely athletic, who's averagely alright looking...

not that i suddenly feel i'm all that great,
but i just feel more appreciated and that i'm worth something.

here, instead of trying to beat you down and forcing you into the rat race,
you see a reason to stop for a moment to smell the plumeria.

i ask all atheist:
if you don't believe in anything then isn't science just horror and phantasm?
are you asserting that you are studying to know how life eventually leads to nothing?
think about it.

i hope all of you know that you all have the capability to change someone's life.
if not their life, their week.
or their day.

outside my window they sang a birthday song for me.
my first surprise party you don't even know how loved i feel.

rewind to 2 months back.
i hooked up with this guy named isaac.
everything started out great.
our first date was counting shooting stars while we camped out on sunset beach.

but somewhere in between things started to fall apart.
and then last week we broke up.
it was hard letting him go.
but just yesterday i can see why it's absolutely necessary for us to separate.

the relationship may have been a 9.999999.
but it wasn't a 10.
this was a guy i liked a lot.
so much that in the short 2 months we made plans to meet parents,
discuss how we would manage our finances so that by next year or so we can be married.

chick lits and chick flicks teach you that
you should not try to change the person that you love.
they deceivingly imply that if you have found 'the one',
two of you will fit like a glove,
happily ever after follows.

the questions you should ask yourself is:
does he do all he can to make you happy?
is he willing to sacrifice for you?
with good reason, will he change the things that you don't like about him?
and are you willing to do the same for him?

a life long relationship will take all the effort and sacrifice you can imagine.
perhaps i was too in love with him,
i accepted his flaws as it is.
never realizing, until now,
that i was keeping him from becoming the man he ought to be,
in order to become a loving husband and dad.

i too, have to right some past wrongs.
if it were not for this break up,
i would have thought that is it unnecessary.
or that it didn't matter.

this past week i have been praying a lot.
and i do feel Him lifting me up because it's not loneliness that i feel.
it's peace.

the answer to my prayers is
" in separation we will grow"
grow apart?
spiritually?
mentally?
emotionally?
physically?
closer?
i do not know.
all i know is whatever happened was for the best.

i hope he will find a girl that he can love and treat like a princess.
he's a great, amazing guy who only deserves the best for him.
it'll be a little while more until i scurry off to find one for myself though.
life is great as it is right now.
the boys who are queuing up for me lines all the way to waikiki.
(just kidding)

in 6 months of being here,
i feel like my wisdom grew 6 years.

i really want you guys to see how amazing this place is.
and how wonderful the people here are.
i love it.

TODAY I JUMPED OFF THE WAIMEA ROCKS!
of course that picture is googled.
sara had her digital and so do i,
but it's no dslr. =(

so what *we* did was:

some kid left this poor cow soft toy.
i wanted to take it home!
but i wasn't sure if the boy was still around.
and if he'll come back to look for it.

after that jump i was so light headed i swear i nearly drowned.
james had to drag me to shore cos i was too weak to swim there.
the waves were too strong and it keeps pulling me back in shore!!

i did that just so i can say that i jumped off the waimea rocks.
i doubt i'll ever do that again.
if i do,
i'll need a super canggih camera to take a vid that'll last a lifetime.
and that time,
i'll do it right.
no more landing like a dumbo!

it reminds me of all the good times we had,

i can only roughly recall the face of the boy who sat beside me in first grade.

i wonder how's he doing now.
and whether he remembers me at all.

life's been busy.
as you can probably tell.

one moment i'm having the time of my life,
the next i'm stifled by the longing of my family, food, room and friends back home.
i need to balance the extremities of my emotions before i can blog properly again.
i don't want complaints tagging along the happy news i have to share.

it's not that i hate it here.
i want to enjoy it with my family and loved ones, more like.
if they were here it would be the icing on the cake.
not that cake's not good.

without icing it just pretty much sucks.

everyday new epiphanies emerge.
the sort that don't necessarily do me good.
in that way it's good that i'm busy.

it's weird.
i thought that once i come here i'll have a billion exciting things to blog about.
well they happen,
but i just fail to express equivalent verve through wordy explanations.
not to say that i'm such a brilliant word smith to begin with,

and work and school has been good.

got my job.

it's been a loooooooong week i tell you.
it feels like i've been doing the loco-motion for a week straight!
the only thing i have yet to complete is my interview with the social security officer.
but that's not till next week.

they total up to 12 credits.

and i'm on the waiting list for Art 220.
where i'll learn stuff like visual design and stuff.

which i am desperately trying to enroll in

well just for dramatics and suspense,

we just wanted to dip our ankles cos
we went there quite spontaneously
and weren't prepared to swim at all
but the waves got us pretty wet.

i'm not prepared to share pictures of my room just yet,
not because it's messy,
just that it's not personalized yet,
so everything's kinda dull.

here's what my dorm sorta looks like though.

our campus is right behind these mighty mountains.

people keep asking me how's the beach.
well it's pretty and all,
but right now it's winter.
though hawaii supposedly has tropical climate,
during winter it gets sorta chilly.
there's constant strong winds,
and it rains crickets and ladybugs most of the time.
sometimes cats and dogs,
and then there's the occasional hippos and elephants.
that happened last night.

so yeah you wouldn't wanna go to the beach when it's cold and rainy like that.
see the stormy clouds?
don't they look just so ready to pee?

today when i went to foodland(a smaller walmart) to get stuff,
i saw a maltese on my way,
made me miss cassie so much!

i could've swear that i stuffed her
in my luggage but i guess she escaped.

i don't think i'll be going to the dance tonight.
there's a dance to welcome new students and also to welcome the new year's.
i think i'll just let the new year's seep in quietly while talking to my baby on skype.

seeing all those couples doing couply stuff makes me emo.

it's my first sunday in BYUH today.
they talked about new year's resolution.

one speaker said that
in their family their goal is to better themselves everyday.
so a new year's resolution would basically to be better than last year.
and that it would be easier to achieve long term goals
by creating and first achieving short term ones.

the second speaker went on and on and on
till i forgot what was the core of her speech.
sorry!
my attention span is this short |-----|
but i think she said something about always being positive.

the third speaker mentioned that
his resolution would not only be about perfecting himself,
but also helping others around him perfect themselves as well.
for example don't gossip so that your friends won't gossip with you.
this would be an amazing feat for me.

the fourth has limited time,
so she challenged us each to put serious thought and effort into our resolutions.

church is very different without the kids.
i miss them.
they may be rowdy but they breathe life into my sundays.
i miss them calling me 'teacher melody!'
i still remember their hugs.

i haven't come up with my list of resolutions yet.
but by me studying abroad i think
i'm already taking huge leaps towards
independence, maturity and responsibility no?

after vowing not to step another TOE back into indonesia,
i ended up there again 2 months later.
why?
invitations from the rents' business friends.
that's why.

if you've been to Bali,
you can't entirely say you've been to indonesia.
because it's so commercialized everything's different inland.

i could walk you through the whole trip,
but it would be boring cos
the actual trip was painstakingly boring.

after bingeing on these,
it was a 5 hour drive on a very very sinuous road up to Berastagi.
took a wicked toll on me,
hurled all of it out.
to this day,
everytime i pass by a donut store,
i can still taste the foul puke.
YUCK!

this would be the main attraction at Berastagi.
it's equivalent to our cameron highlands.
well known for its agricultural products.
locals go there every weekends for the weather.
temperature is around 17-20(c) at day,
much lower at night.

passion fruit looks like this,

the market place doesn't only sell fruits & veg,
they sell souvenirs and pets too!

janelle enjoying the satay i was too sick to devour.

the following day we headed further upwards to Lake Toba.
i *think* i learned about Lake Toba in form 3's geography.
journey was another torturous 5 hours or so.
by the time we reached our hotel i was so konked
i didn't enjoy any of the scenic views we had.
this was the only picture i took.

the next night was spent at our hostess' home.
i helped her 8 year old anak bongsu with his coloring.
normally his driver and his maid does.

they took us out that night for food and i ordered indomie goreng.
the best dish i had
(or was it because it was the only one i was healthy enough to enjoy?)
with my passion fruit drink.

shopping there was lousy.

i get butterflies.

i did a mistake of being too open

cassie turned 1 on the 26th.
